SAMS was founded in 2023 by conceptual artist Aaron Michael Skolnick, based in upstate New York. The project emerged directly from Skolnick’s established gallery practice, beginning as an extension of his exhibition work. He committed to wearing only clothing he made himself, shifting his thinking from objects to actions—works that did not need to be recognized as art in order to carry meaning.
SAMS operates as a one-person studio, with every garment cut and constructed by Skolnick. The clothing is made primarily from deadstock fabrics, muslin, and vintage garments that are carefully dissected and reconstructed. Most pieces are one of a kind, while others are produced to order, reducing overproduction and allowing each garment to feel personal to its collector.
At its core, SAMS is committed to creating clothing that is comfortable, inclusive, and wearable at any moment of daily life. Comfort is not an afterthought but a guiding principle: garments are designed with sensitivity to diverse bodies and sensory needs, aiming to offer clothing that feels as good to wear as it is thoughtful in its making.
